Tata Power has partnered with Bhutan’s Druk Green Power Corporation (DGPC) to develop 5,000 MW of clean energy capacity in Bhutan. This collaboration marks the largest partnership in Asia’s clean energy sector between these two nations.
This strategic alliance not only underpins the shared vision of the two countries for energy security but also aligns with Bhutan’s goal to maximize the economic benefits from its vast renewable resources.
The initiative will fast-track the development of Bhutan’s clean energy resources, contributing significantly to its long-term economic development and energy security needs.
Tata Power and DGPC have a longstanding relationship, dating back to 2008 with the development of the Dagachhu Hydropower Plant. They are now looking to expand their collaboration with these new projects.
Bhutan aims to increase its hydropower capacity to over 5,500 MW within the next five years, which will largely support both domestic needs and export to India, especially during the monsoon months when the generation peaks.
The Memorandum of Understanding for this project was signed in Thimphu, in the presence of senior officials from both governments. This agreement solidifies the framework for both immediate and future collaborations between Tata Power and DGPC.
Tata Power’s strategic initiative not only emphasizes its commitment to clean energy but also positions the company as a leader in sustainable energy development in the region. The company’s portfolio includes over 12.9 GW of capacity, with a strategic aim to have 70% clean energy by 2030.
Additionally, the stock price of Tata Power Company Ltd reacted positively, closing up by ₹3.35 or 0.83%, signifying market approval of this expansive venture.
This ambitious project is set to forge a path to a sustainable future, highlighting the significant roles of strategic international partnerships in the clean energy sector. With such collaborations, both nations aim to achieve remarkable advancements in energy generation and economic development.
