Sierra Leone–Power Leone, Energicity Corp subsidiary in Sierra Leone, is excited to announce the recent launch of its electric mobility productive use program with e-bikes proving up to the task of sustainably serving customer demand in Power Leone''s minigrid-powered rural communities where motorbikes are the main mode of public transportation.
Energicity’s commercial e-bike program was first launched in May 2024, with e-bikes deployed and powered by Power Leone’s solar powered minigrids. With these e-bikes, customers can travel more cleanly and affordably. Energicity’s Emobility program leverages MAX’s M3 bikes that have been tailored to suit west African terrain. At scale, Energicity expects to serve over 1000 customers at scale over its existing portfolio of minigrids and counting across its markets in West Africa.
Energicity is one of the pioneers in bringing electric mobility to rural communities. With its extensive network of minigrids, including the biggest in Sierra Leone, Energicity is able to tap into the unserved demand for more sustainable transportation in areas that would typically be constrained by the lack of electricity infrastructure.

The Government of Sierra Leone, through the Ministry of Transport and Aviation, has officially launched an e-mobility initiative, introducing electric vehicles, electric tricycles (kekehs), and electric motorbikes alongside charging stations. The launch took place at the Miatta Conference Hall in Freetown.
Speaking at the event, Deputy Minister of Transport and Aviation, Mr. Rex Bonapha, highlighted the durability and efficiency of the electric machines, noting that their charging facilities can sustain operations for extended periods. He emphasized that the initiative is expected to alleviate long queues at fuel stations, create employment opportunities for young people, and contribute significantly to the country’s economic growth.

The Global Environment Facility (GEF) is a multilateral fund dedicated to confronting biodiversity loss, climate change, pollution, and strains on land and ocean health. Over the past three decades, the GEF has provided more than $22 billion in financing and mobilized another $120 billion for more than 5,000 national and regional projects.
With support from PREO, Mobile Power is now launching Battery swap stations for electric motorbikes in Sierra Leone. The e-motorbikes are rented on a daily basis to drivers of motorcycle taxis known locally as okadas, with MOPO Batteries charged via solar mini-grids. This model deploys the new 1kWh MOPOMax Battery which has been designed to facilitate both productive use and e-mobility solutions. The MOPOMaxBattery will also be incorporated and charged through Mobile Power''s country-wide network of MOPO Hubs.
The PREO project targets were straightforward: to assess the product-market fit for the e-motorbikes and battery swap system and thereafter to demonstrate that this clean energy powered e-mobility solution can be a viable generator of profit for the rider, the solar mini-grids partners and for Mobile Power itself.
Early evidence obtained from testing the prototype was encouraging: the e-motorbike operated as part of the pilot has covered thousands of miles on rural and urban roads and it has proved popular with riders and customers alike; given the high prices of fuel, the unit economics for the rider were vastly improved when compared to petrol motorbikes; the data shows that the e-motorbikes can improve the daily profits of the okada drivers by more than 100% to at least GBP 3 per day. Mobile Power has plans to scale its battery swap for e-mobility footprint in 2022.
SIERRA LEONE, Freetown: The Minister of Environment, Prof. Foday Moriba Jaward on Wednesday 24th November 2021 launched the "supporting Sierra Leone with the shift to electric mobility" project at the Civil Service Training College in Freetown.
The project is piloted by the Government of Sierra Leone through the Environment Protection Agency, the Ministry of Energy and the Ministry of Transport with the support of Global Environment Facility and the United Nations Environment Program.
The project aims at mitigating Green House Gas (GHG) emissions in Sierra Leone by accelerating the introduction of electric mobility through the development of legal, regulatory and institutional frameworks, capacity building, demonstration of pilot electric vehicles, development of business models for private sector engagement and finance schemes for upscaling and replication.
