90% of the population of Kabul, in Afghanistan, reportedly uses fossil fuels such as wood, charcoal, sawdust, and coal for heating, adding to air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions.

Initiated in November 2020 and scheduled to be conducted until April 2022, these new actions, carried out by Geres, the Afghan NGO Rural Movement Organisation (RMO) and in coordination with local authorities, are part of the continuity of the project to disseminate bioclimatic solutions for the inhabitants of Kabul (“Kabul Green Homes”).

Thanks to this new project dedicated to energy efficiency, 180 craftsmen will benefit from training and direct employment. Geres intends to actively contribute to the deployment of energy saving solutions, particularly in urban areas, with two major ambitions: to reduce energy poverty while contributing to the mitigation and adaptation of climate change.

Among the first significant steps, a first training workshop on climate change and the importance of energy efficiency was held on June 1-2, 2021 in Faizabad, a city of the Badakhshan region.

Supported by the German Cooperation (GIZ) and organized by Geres and RMO, the workshop lasted 2 days and brought together more than 40 people from government institutions, NGOs, Badakhshan University, Badakhshan Departments of Agriculture and Environment, and the Community Council.

The second day was punctuated by teachings on the link between energy and environment with a focus on the benefits of energy efficiency and a training devoted to bioclimatic construction techniques, methodologies and examples of success, based on the “Kabul Green Homes” project already conducted by Geres.

Despite the difficult health context, our teams based in Afghanistan are very happy to have been able to hold this face-to-face event which was very well received.
