MANAMA: Mahmood Rafique, Editor: The Kingdom of Bahrain on Monday marked yet another milestone in alternative clean renewable energy with the opening of second largest solar power project with capacity of 9million kWh per year for the next 25 years.

Kieran Gallagher, Managing Director, Vitol Bahrain, said that they would continue to contribute towards Bahrain''s commitment in reducing carbon footprint. "Vitol with presence of 40 years in Bahrain Vitol is already in tendering process of other projects in the Kingdom and across the region," on the sidelines of the opening ceremony, Kieran Gallagher told The24X7News ().

The opening ceremony held at Dragon City under the patronage of Dr. Mohammed bin Mubarak Bin Daina, the Minister of Oil and Environment and Special Envoy for Climate Affairs. The minister felicitated Vitol team after the official inauguration of Dragon City Solar Plant.

The 5.7 MW plant is the largest solar carport plant and second largest solar project in the Kingdom to date. Dragon City will benefit from 9,000,000 kWh of clean renewable energy per year over the next 25 years, enabling it to significantly reduce its carbon footprint. The project will also include two electric vehicle (EV) charging points, and the infrastructure to scale this as EV adoption in the Kingdom grows.

"We are pleased to be launching the Dragon City solar plant under the patronage of Dr. Mohammed bin Mubarak bin Daina. This pioneering initiative aims to serve members of our local community and encourage sustainability across Diyar Al Muharraq''s various residential and commercial projects. At Diyar Al Muharraq, we remain dedicated to investing in environmentally conscious practices in line with our vision to build a sustainable city for both residents and visitors," Eng. Ahmed Ali Alammadi Diyar Al Muharraq CEO and DC board member, said.

"Dragon City Solar demonstrates how solar can be integrated seamlessly into existing and necessary infrastructure. It has been a privilege to partner with Dragon City on this important project – the second largest in the Kingdom.  We look forward to seeking further opportunities where we can add value to Bahrain''s energy journey," Kieran Gallagher, added.

Offshore renewable energy development presents an opportunity to pursue large-scale generation and achieve higher renewable energy targets. Bahrain has a good wind regime and shallow waters conducive to the installation of near shore or offshore wind farms. Other offshore renewable energy options include connecting Bahrain and its GCC neighbors through an integrated network of infrastructure facilities with renewable energy capabilities, such as causeways and railway systems.

SEA is planning a waste heat recovery pilot program, whereexcessheat generated byAluminum Bahrain (Alba), the world''s largest single-site smelter outside of mainland China, can be captured and converted to electricity.Like other GCCstates, over half of Bahrain''s annual electricity consumption isdue tothe extensive use ofair conditioningbecause of the warm Gulf climate. As a result, Bahrain is looking to utilize the practice of "district cooling" to increase the efficiency of air conditioning by as much as50percent.

Bahrain generates approximately 2.6kg of waste per person per day. To better manage solid waste challenges, Bahrain''s Ministry of Works is currently overseeinga project implemented by an international consultancy to analyze and determine waste materials available for recycling, conversion to agricultural products, or electricity production through incinerationat the Askar landfill. Bahrain is also exploring options for international investment in plasma gasification—as process which converts waste into resalable byproducts, including hydrogen, electricity, and construction materials.
