GM Energy is expanding its portfolio with the launch of the GM Energy PowerBank, a stationary storage product that gives EV owners the power to store and transfer energy from the grid, and the option of integrating with solar power equipment. The General Motors unit has also expanded access to energy management products across all 50 states.

The GM Energy PowerBank, which comes in in 10.6 kWh and 17.7 kWh battery capacity variants, can provide power to a home when there is an outage or help to offset higher electricity rates during peak demand. Customers can also store and use captured solar energy, supplement charging of EVs and provide power to a home without the presence of an EV.

By combining two 17.7kWh GM Energy PowerBanks, consumers can create 35.4kWh of stationary storage, enough to power the average American home for up to 20 hours1.

"One of the core differentiators of GM Energy''s portfolio is its modularity," said Wade Sheffer, vice president of GM Energy. "The flexibility of our energy management tools, combined with one of the market''s largest lineups of vehicle-to-home-capable EVs, gives our customers more control over their energy use, helping to mitigate the impact of power outages, integrating renewable energy options and unlocking additional values."

The GM Energy PowerBank is available for purchase as part of the GM Energy Home System bundle, which also includes a GM Energy PowerShift charger and GM Energy Vehicle-to-Home Enablement kit. Customers who previously purchased the GM Energy V2H Bundle can simply add on a GM Energy PowerBank.

For customers integrating solar power, GM Energy will refer customers to preferred installer Qmerit for site assessments, compatibility checks, and personalized quotes.

As with existing GM Energy V2H products, the GM Energy PowerBank and compatible solar power systems will be accessible via GM''s brand mobile apps, for seamless energy management.

1The GM Energy Storage Bundle shown requires a fully charged and properly equipped PowerBank, and proper grid interconnection. The U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) estimates average daily home energy appliance usage to be 30 kWh. Weather conditions, life of the battery, PowerBank usage and other external factors may impact the duration of time. Power supply may be interrupted: not recommended for medical devices.

GM Energy, a wholly owned subsidiary of General Motors, is focused on expanding and accelerating a holistic energy ecosystem through new products, software and services, including broadening access to EV education and resources, expanding public charging infrastructure, and developing new energy management solutions for customers. LG Energy Solutions is set to launch a new residential energy storage system in the U.S. this November. The product, called the enblock S, is a stackable, modular lithium-ion battery that the company said is designed around flexibility of design and ease of installation.

The battery has the option of stacking three, four, or five battery module assemblies along with a battery control unit. The smallest size, the S 10, has three module assemblies and 10.6 kWh, the S 14 has four battery module assemblies with 14.1 kWh, and the largest, the S 17, contains five battery module assemblies, carrying 17.7 kWh. The enblock S also supports the parallel connection of two matching units for a maximum power output of 14 kW.

LG said customer can increase energy capacity based on their energy consumption patterns by purchasing additional modules. As homeowners continue to electrify appliances and purchase EVs, flexibility in battery capacity offers a way to meet growing demand.

The company said the battery is easy to install, with no bolts to fasten, and a "plug and play" connector. It said that a single installer can complete an enblock S installation in 15 minutes. Both wall-mounted and standing configurations are supported, and the battery can be used in both indoor and outdoor settings.

The company reports that the battery has met rigorous safety standards to ensure prevention of thermal runway fires, a problem in some lithium-ion home batteries. It has passed UL9540A testing.

Later in the year, LG will introduce the enblock S+, which will enable customers to purchase the enblock S battery along with the company''s new AC-coupled inverter as a bundled solution. The coupled option is offered in two configurations, backup power and energy arbitrage, and can be retrofitted to an existing PV system.

“LG Energy Solution enblock S is a versatile, expandable, and simple to install Energy Storage System (ESS),” said Matthew Unverferth, residential ESS sales manager with the LGES ESS team in North America. "To offer the highest level of product safety, LG Energy Solutions enblock S was laboratory tested and proven compliant, receiving the industry standard UL9540A fire safety rating."
