The successful implementation will pave the way for wider adoption and possible export of the technology to other regions beyond the borders of South Africa," said Eskom''s General Manager: Distribution, Operations Enablement, Velaphi Ntuli.

"The Hex project is a demonstration of what Eskom teams can do in finding alternative, innovative and lasting solutions in addressing the country''s electricity challenges," said Eskom''s Group Executive for Generation, Bheki Nxumalo.

The Hex project benefited the local community of Worcester by employing about 250 local community members, supporting twelve early childhood centres with playground and educational material, donation of computers, donation of five hundred full school uniforms. Furthermore, other corporate social investment projects are to be executed before the end of March 2024.

Upon completion of the first Phase, Eskom will implement Phase 2 of the project which includes the installation of a further 144MW of storage capacity, equivalent to 616MWh at four Eskom Distribution sites and one Transmission site. The solar PV capacity in this phase will be 58MW.

The rollout of these technologies together with a disciplined execution of our Generation Recovery Plan which started in March 2023, and aimed at achieving energy availability factor of 70% by end March 2025, will give the country the most needed megawatts to address capacity constraints.

The City of Cape Town has issued a tender for a battery energy storage system (BESS) with a minimum rated power output of 5 MW and energy storage capacity of 8 MWh.

Geordin Hill-Lewis, Executive Mayor of Cape Town, announced this at a gathering on the site of the Atlantis solar photovoltaic (PV) plant. The BESS will be built on the same site so that it functions with the solar PV as a hybrid plant.

According to a statement from the city, it is the first metro in South Africa to start construction of its own solar PV plant. The R200 million Atlantis solar PV project is expected to be built within a year. It will be connected to a nearby main substation to feed 7-10 MW directly into the grid.

"This is the first utility-scale renewable energy project in Cape Town and it will be owned and operated by the city. The first power is expected to be delivered near the end of 2025. The idea is to potentially have a number of similar plants rolled out across the metro in years to come," said Hill-Lewis.

Hill-Lewis said: "The city currently uses 75% of the tariff income from our electricity sales to buy Eskom power. With the continued Eskom price escalations, we simply have to diversify energy resources."

The three Oasis 1 battery energy storage systems (BESS) projects, led by the EDF group and partners, all reached financial close this month. Awarded in the first round of South Africa''s Battery Energy Storage Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme, the projects are expected to be commissioned within 24 months and will contribute to the security of supply and stabilising the electrical grid in the country.

The Department of Mineral Resources and Energy awarded preferred bidder status to five projects of Round 1 of the Battery Energy Storage Independent Power Producer Programme in November last year. The Oasis consortium, which was awarded three of the five projects, is led by the EDF Group and includes co-sponsor Mulilo, and equity partners Pele Energy Group and Gibb-Crede. Each project includes a 5% ownership interest for local communities through a community trust.

The Mookodi substation is located near Vryburg in the North West Province. Despite its geographical position, it is part of the Northern Cape Supply Area within Eskom’s transmission network.

The projects are crucial to the South African electricity infrastructure as the system needs more flexibility to improve the grid stability. According to Eskom, the total energy shortage reached 14.4TWh in 2023.

The EDF Group has already been active in the development of decarbonised generation assets in the country, operating four wind farms (145 MW), and is currently developing several wind, solar, and hybrid projects totalling 1GW of installed capacity.
