Finnish startup Polar Night Energy is building an industrial-scale thermal energy storage system in southern Finland. The 100-hour, sand-based storage system will use crushed soapstone, a by-product from a fireplace manufacturer, as its storage medium.
Finnish startup Polar Night Energy has announced that construction is proceeding according to plan on its thermal energy sand-based storage system in the municipality of Pornainen in southern Finland. The 1 MW system will supply thermal energy for Loviisan Lämpö''s district heating network.
Once in operation, it will be capable of storing up to 100 MWh of thermal energy – a capacity equivalent to almost one month of heating demand in the summer and one week of demand in Pornainen in the winter. Polar Night Energy said its Sand Battery works as a high-power, high-capacity reservoir for excess wind and solar energy, storing energy in sand as heat.

The investment round was led by Jonathan Oppenheimer, and co-led by Finnish investment companies Stephen Industries, Holdix and Turret, and joined by a Swedish family-owned investment company PC Rettig & Co. Impact and a group of existing investors.
Polar Night Energy and Jonathan Oppenheimer share the vision that thermal energy storage sits at the center of clean energy production. Jonathan Oppenheimer is a South African businessman, social impact investor, and conservationist. He has been appointed to the Board of Directors at Polar Night Energy.

Additionally, the new investors will provide invaluable strategic insights and industrial expertise, strengthening Polar Night''s strategic efforts and bringing fresh perspectives to the company.
Recently, Polar Night Energy achieved significant progress with the announcement of a new industrial-scale Sand Battery project with Loviisan Lämpö, a Finnish district heating company, in addition to a partnership with Ilmatar, a Nordic energy company and independent power producer (IPP), aimed at storing surplus wind and solar energy in large-scale Sand Batteries.
