It is my pleasure as Minister of Climate Change Adaptation, Meteorology & Geo-Hazards, Energy, Environment and Disaster Management, to welcome you to the Ministry''s website.

This Ministry was created by the Government of Vanuatu in 2014 for the purpose of strategically aligning Departments responsible for the response to natural disasters and sustainable development of the environment.

While, it is the youngest Ministry in Government, the Ministry has taken long strides within a short period of time in all sectors under its responsibility in terms of policy development and their implementation as well as legislative framework.

Since taking up this office in August 2024, much have happened, including the launch of the National Adaptation Plan (NAP) and the Vehicle Emissions Standards projects.

Such projects are a testament to our commitment to the Paris Agreement and our Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), as well as our dedication to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.

Under my predecessors, in August 2022 the second edition of the National Climate Change and Disaster Risk Reduction Policy and Implementation Plan were launched.

This Corporate Plan aims to guide the Ministry and its line departments in achieving overarching goals to drive planning, decision-making, programming and project delivery across government and its stakeholders.

At the global stage, Vanuatu has taken the lead in successfully getting the United Nations General Assembly to adopt a Resolution calling for an Advisory Opinion from the International Court of Justice on Climate Change as well as calling for the development of a Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty.

This website brings to you as much information to fulfill the Ministry''s vision of promoting a resilient, sustainable, safe and informed Vanuatu as well as its mission of developing sound policies and legislative frameworks and providing timely, reliable scientific information for service delivery to enable resilient communities, maintain a sustainable environment and engage in economic development as outlined by the National Sustainable Development Plan (NSDP).

The DoE is responsible for the development of energy policies, legislations and regulations to guide the development of energy services in Vanuatu and improve service delivery.

The Department is also responsible for the identification, implementation, management and evaluation of energy projects, monitoring and facilitating energy activities as well as providing awareness and training activities.

Many of us want an overview of how much energy our country consumes, where it comes from, and if we''re making progress on decarbonizing our energy mix. This page provides the data for your chosen country across all of the key metrics on this topic.

In the selection box above you can also add or remove additional countries and they will appear on all of the charts on this page. This allows you to compare specific countries you might be interested in, and measure progress against others.

In the energy domain, there are many different units thrown around – joules, exajoules, million tonnes of oil equivalents, barrel equivalents, British thermal units, terawatt-hours, to name a few. This can be confusing, and make comparisons difficult. So at Our World in Data we try to maintain consistency by converting all energy data to watt-hours. We do this to compare energy data across different metrics and sources.

Electricity is a good that adds massive value to modern life: from having light at night; to washing clothes; cooking meals; running machinery; or connecting with people across the world. Many would argue that it is a crucial for poverty alleviation, economic growth and improved living standards.1

Having clean fuels and technologies for cooking – meaning non-solid fuels such as natural gas, ethanol or even electric technologies – makes these processes more efficient, saving both time and energy.
