The Noor Abu Dhabi is the world''s largest single-site solar power plant[1] as of November 2022, located near Abu Dhabi in Sweihan.
The generating capacity is 1.177 GW; the total project cost is US$870 million.[3] The plant provides power for 90,000 individuals in Abu Dhabi. It uses a waterless robotic technology to clean the solar panels. The robots travel a distance of 1600 kilometres every day to clean it.
The commercial operations of the plant started on April 30, 2019.[4][7]
The plant attracted the world''s most competitive tariff bid in 2016, at 8.888 fils/kWh. It was awarded Utility Project of the Year at the 2020 Middle East Solar Awards and the Power Generation Project of the Year at the MEED Projects Awards 2020.[6]
Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company – Masdar and TAQA –alongside partners EDF and JinkoPower – developed the AlDhafra Solar Photovoltaic (PV) Independent Power Producer(IPP) project.
Al Dhafra Solar PV is 40 percent owned by TAQA, Masdarowns 20 percent, while the remaining 40 percent is equallyshared by EDF and JinkoPower. Financial close of theproject was achieved in December 2020 and the site becamefully operational in June 2023.
The record-breaking project, located approximately 35kilometers from Abu Dhabi city, has a capacity of 2 gigawatts(GW) and supplies power to the plant''s off-taker, EmiratesWater and Electricity Company (EWEC). Upon completion in June 2023, Al Dhafra was the world''s largest single-site solar plant, using almost 4 million bifacial solar panelsto generate enough electricity for approximately 200,000homes across the UAE, displacing 2.4 million tonnes ofcarbon emissions annually.
The plant deploys the latest in crystalline, bifacial solartechnology, which delivers electricity to the highestefficiency enabling the plant to provide more power by usingboth the front and back of the panels
One of the world''s largest single-site solar power plants, Noor Abu Dhabi began commercial operations in April 2019. It is EWEC''s first significant project that uses sustainable technology, achieving a key milestone in the transformation of Abu Dhabi''s energy sector, and increasing the share of the country''s energy mix.
