Dispatch, a leading Dutch battery developer, is going to construct the Netherlands’ largest stand-alone Battery Energy Storage System (BESS). This groundbreaking 45MW/ 90Mh utility-scale BESS will be located in the port area of Dordrecht, on a 6000m² site and will be used for grid stabilization by storing excess energy from renewable sources. Construction is set to commence in the coming months and arranged in partnership with infrastructure fund EPICo², Macquarie Capital and lender ABN AMRO.
Jeroen Zanders, Managing Director for Macquarie Capital in the Benelux region, shared his enthusiasm: "We are excited to be partnering with Dispatch and EPICo² to support the needed investment for a new BESS in the Netherlands. The Dutch battery market is currently under-developed and with the race to net zero, it is an increasingly important component for renewables in the energy mix."

The battery, consisting of 144 Fluence cubes will be located on a 6000m² site. The 45MW/ 90Mh utility-scale BESS will on average store enough energy supply equivalent for 21.500 households per day. Construction is set to commence in the coming months. Equans Netherlands will take charge of the engineering and construction of the battery storage system.
The project is arranged in partnership with infrastructure fund EPICo², Macquarie Capital and lender ABN AMRO. It marks the first of many in a strategic alliance between Dispatch and Macquarie Capital aimed at developing up to 3GWh of BESS projects across the Netherlands, Belgium, and Germany over the next seven years.
Lion Storage has received a construction permit for a 347MW/1,457MW BESS project while Giga Storage hopes to start construction on a similarly sized one this year, representing a major step forward for the grid-scale energy storage market in the Netherlands.
Developer Lion Storage has received a construction permit for its first battery energy storage system (BESS) project, Mufasa, it announced on LinkedIn yesterday (24 June). The project in the port area of Vlissingen, northern Netherlands, is expected to be operational in 2026, Lion has said in the past.
In concurrent news, Giga Storage hopes to start construction on its 300MW/1,200MWh Leopard BESS project in the Netherlands this year, CCO Lars Rupert told Energy-Storage.news whilst at the ees Europe trade show and conference last week.
The two announcements are major steps forward for the energy storage market in the Netherlands, which is generally agreed to be significantly further behind than neighbouring Belgium and Germany.
