Feature papers represent the most advanced research with significant potential for high impact in the field. A Feature Paper should be a substantial original Article that involves several techniques or approaches, provides an outlook for future research directions and describes possible research applications.
Editor''s Choice articles are based on recommendations by the scientific editors of MDPI journals from around the world. Editors select a small number of articles recently published in the journal that they believe will be particularly interesting to readers, or important in the respective research area. The aim is to provide a snapshot of some of the most exciting work published in the various research areas of the journal.

24 October 2024:Yesterday, the European Commission selected 85 innovative net-zero projects to receive €4.8 billion in grants from the Innovation Fund, supporting the implementation of cutting-edge clean technologies across Europe. Among these is a project featuring a hybrid energy storage system that combines lithium-ion and vanadium flow batteries, directly linked to a large-scale solar PV farm!
The selected projects are expected to commence operations before 2030 and, over their first ten years, are projected to reduce emissions by approximately 476 million tonnes of CO2 equivalent. The project involving flow batteries will be located in France, and more information will be provided soon.
The EU ETS Innovation FundThe EU ETS Innovation Fund is one of the world’s largest funding programmes for the deployment of net-zero and innovative technologies. Resources for projects are drawn from the EU Emissions Trading System, which is expected to allocate €40 billion between 2020 and 2030.
In the last call for proposals, the Innovation Fund received 337 project applications, of which 283 were deemed eligible and admissible for evaluation. A total of 149 projects were awarded the STEP Seal (EU quality label), and 85 projects were selected for the grant.
What is the STEP Seal (EU quality label)? It is an EU quality label awarded to high-quality projects that have applied for EU funding under existing programmes and were recognised as providing great value, but did not receive a grant due to limited programme resources.
This label will enhance projects visibility and help attract alternative or additional public and private investments. For example, Member States can directly grant support from Cohesion Policy funds to projects that have been awarded a STEP Seal, without any additional selection procedures.
Additionally, these projects will be promoted on the STEP Portal, providing them with further visibility to investors and potentially attracting public and private funding by certifying their quality.
The joint letter, addressed to the Slovenian presidency and rapporteurs of the European Parliament, outlines key recommendations to improve the "Fit for 55" legislative proposals.
09 October 2023: In January 2023, FBE joinedBatteries Europe, a European Technology & Innovation Platform dedicated to advancing Research and Innovation initiatives on batteries. This partnership aims to expedite the development of a highly competitive European battery industry. It also seeks to facilitate the execution of the Implementation Plan outlined in SET Plan Action 7, […]
13 March 2024: In February, the German government reached an agreement on the Power Plant Strategy with the aim of creating state support mechanisms for newly built gas power plants. Nearly €44 billion in subsidies are set to support the cause of ensuring that enough electricity is generated “when there is little sun and wind,” […]
11 April 2024: As we approach the European elections and a new legislative term, our FBE Manifesto highlights 4 key EU policy goals and presents opportunities for a seamless transition to climate neutrality. The EU faces significant hurdles in achieving its decarbonisation targets outlined in the European Green Deal. Reliable energy storage, especially LDES, is […]
