Saint Lucia is a volcanic mountainous island state situated in the Caribbean Sea and bordered by the North Atlantic Ocean. It is vulnerable to rising sea levels, with increasingly intense storms, more frequent droughts, and ecosystem losses. Saint Lucia''s vulnerability is exacerbated by its location along the north Atlantic hurricane corridor, small surface area, irregular topography, reliance on climate-sensitive subsectors of tourism and agriculture, high population density, and concentration of infrastructure in coastal settlements.
CIF''s investment in Saint Lucia is through its Pilot Program for Climate Resilience (PPCR).Saint Lucia is one of six Caribbean island nations participating in a regional PPCR program to improve climate data collection, analysis and sharing, and pilot innovative climate resilient initiatives. In line with its own strategic plan for climate resilience under PPCR, the country aims to support mainstreaming climate change adaptation in national development planning and decision-making.
Its $27-million PPCR investment plan is focused on climate-proofing infrastructure against floods and landslides, improving the application of disaster and climate risk information, and establishing a climate adaptation financing facility for pre-emptive investments and an emergency fund for post-disaster support.
