Chargy is Luxembourg''s network of publicly accessible charging stations for electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids. It has been operational since June 2017. For 2019, the managing authority plans to install 200 new charging stations across the country. The network is expected to reach 800 charging stations by the end of 2021: 400 in public municipal car parks and 400 in park-and-ride car parks, which provide easy access to public transport.
102 of the country''s 800 charging stations will be located in the capital. By 2013, the City of Luxembourg had already launched a project to install electric charging stations in three public car parks (Schuman, Rocade and P+R Bouillon). This was extended in 2016 with the installation of three electric charging stations in the car park of the Luxembourg City Conservatoire.
The charging stations will be located on public thoroughfares and in car parks in such a way as to create a dense network, guaranteeing maximum, city-wide coverage.
Full details about the Chargy network – list of charging service providers, incorporation of third-party stations into the system, list of compatible stations, etc. – can be found on the Chargy web site (chargy.lu/en/).
Payment can be made at all charging stations belonging to the network using a standard issue Chargy mKaart smartcard, which also functions as a Verkéiersverbondtransport pass. Users must subscribe with a charging service provider in order to access the stations using their Chargy mKaart card. Once they have subscribed, they will be able to view their electricity charges and locate charging stations.
But that’ s not all! The Chargy network is about to be expanded by 88 additional charging points. What’s making them so special? These new stations, called SuperChargy available at the main road and motorway service areas and at certain car parks are offering ultra-fast charging of electric vehicles. They will be equipped with one charging point and will operate with CCS sockets.
Identifying yourself and paying your charges at a Chargy network charging station is very easy! Simply present your mKaart or any other badge distributed by a charging service provider operating on the Chargy network.
Plus, thanks to the new SuperChargy charging stations, recharging your electric car becomes even more convenient! If you don’t have an mKaart, you can simply use your credit card. You do not need to conclude a contract and pay a fixed price displayed on the screen of the charging station. This ad hoc payment function is also available on Chargy charging stations, where a QR code will redirect you to the charging providers who offer this service.
To obtain your mKaart and thus access all the charging stations in the Chargy network, you must have signed a contract with a charging service provider. They will then give you your mKaart which will serve as your identifier.
