The average cost of a new electric car is 10% higher than the price of a gas-powered vehicle—which costs an average of $48,451. But fuel costs can add up to significant savings for EV drivers over time.
Last year was a record year for electric car sales in the United States. And in 2024, the number of models available on the market is set to get even better. It''s getting to the point where shopping for one can be more daunting than in years past, even as charging options and other technologies continue to grow.
Luckily, we''re here to help. For 2024, we have comprised a list of prices for U.S.-marketbattery-electric vehicles (BEVs), including over 250 individual configurations.
The models covered include those that are currently available for order or reservation, upcoming models, and afew that have been discontinued but may still be found on dealer lots—most notably the Fisker Ocean.
Preparing the list of 250+ individual configurations is a big task, especially with the constant changes to the lineups. Those include new model year cars, price updates, retired models, updates, or range rating announcements.
The constantly changing rules for the $7,500 federal tax credit (with multiple models appearing or disappearing on the list) add to the complexity. Please note that the $7,500 federal tax credit might be available when leasing, which noticeably changes the comparison of some models.
*All prices are MSRP plus destination charge/obligatory fees, if known, and minus the federal tax credit, if eligible. That''s the starting point—an effective minimum cost without options—before considering any rebates, taxes, or local incentives. All driving range numbers are official EPA Combined range figures, or estimated/expected values, usually from the manufacturers.
The today''s list is opened by the discontinued Fisker Ocean crossover, which is the cheapest in the country despite not being eligible for the $7,500 federal tax credit. Fisker''s manufacturing partner Magna only built around 11,000 of them, so some of them might still be available, but we are using them as a reference point. Get them while supplies last, as the TV commercials say.
Excluding the Ocean, which got a huge price cut just before Fisker declared bankruptcy, the least expensive 2024 model-year car is the base Nissan Leaf S with a 40-kilowatt-hour battery, starting at an MSRP of $28,140 (plus $1,140 destination.) It does not qualify for the $7,500 federal tax credit, but the incentive might be included in the leasing, so check with your dealer.
The rather low-range Mini Cooper SE is no longer on sale, so the entry-level Volkswagen ID.4 Standard (62 kWh) is next on the list. It offers more than 200 miles of EPA range and due to the $7,500 federal tax credit eligibility, it can be purchased for as low as $33,660 (including destination.)
Another interesting tidbit is that the upcoming entry-level Chevrolet Equinox EV 1LT is expected to be the least expensive 300-mile electric car on the market, starting at an estimated $35,000 without the $7,500 federal tax credit.
The least expensive new Tesla model currently is theTesla Model 3 Long Range RWD at $36,380 (which includes destination and the $7,500 incentive). It offers an impressive EPA range of 363 miles. The Tesla Model Y is a great value too, albeit slightly more expensive than its recently updated sedan sibling.
Out of 250+ configurations shown below, only 17 can be purchased for under $40,000, because most of the models are not eligible for the $7,500 federal tax credit. This might change in the future. The number of configurations available for less than $50,000 is close to 60.
The least expensive all-electric pickup truck is the Ford F-150 Lightning XLT with a Standard Range battery at $57,590, after destination fees and $7,500 incentive. The closest Rivian R1T pickup (Dual-Motor, Standard Pack) starts at $69,900 withdestination fees, while the Dual-Motor Large Pack version goes for $73,150 because it benefits from a $3,750 tax credit. Meanwhile, the cheapest Tesla Cybertruck goes for $101,985.
Most of the BEV configurations start at less than $100,000, which—at the same time—means that a third of the configurations are vehicles with six-digit prices.
The most expensive BEVs on the market are the ones from Rolls-Royce, Cadillac, Lucid, Porsche, Mercedes-Benz, BMW and Audi. A few of them cost more than $150,000 without options.
