Amea Power said the Benban site will be the largest solar-plus-BESS project in Africa, while the Abydos project will represent the first ever utility-scale BESS solution in Egypt.The company is investing $800 million across both projects, which are expected to provide energy to more than 769,000 homes.

"These projects are not just about generating power, they are catalysts for economic growth, job creation, and community empowerment," said Amea Power Chairman Hussain Al Nowais.

The latest announcements bring Amea Power’s total renewables capacity in Egypt to 2 GW of solar and 900 MWh of BESS. The company claims to have projects in 20 countries, with a pipeline above 6 GW and 1.6 GW currently in operation and under or near construction.

In a separate announcement, Norway''s Scatec said it had signed a 25-year PPA with Egyptian Electricity Transmission Co. (EETC) for a 1 GW solar and 100 MW/200 MWh battery storage hybrid project in Egypt.

"This will be the first hybrid solar and battery project in Egypt," said Scatec CEO Terje Pilskog. "We will now finalize land lease agreements, grid connection agreements and financing, and prepare for construction of the project."

Scatec said it has signed a mandate letter with several development financing institutions for concessional financing. The company expects to reach financial close with the lenders and start construction of the project in the first half of 2025.

Under the terms of the agreement with state-owned EETC, Scatec will be responsible for engineering, procurement & construction, asset management and operations and maintenance services for the project.

Scatec claims to have a portfolio totaling 4.7 GW of renewable energy plants in operation and under construction across four continents. In August, the companysold stakesin solar plants in Rwanda and South Africa, which it said would help finance further growth opportunities.

Earlier this year, state-owned utility Egyptian Electricity Holding Co. held anexpressions-of-interest tenderfor the design, construction and operation of a 8.2 MW solar plant and 2 MW/4MWh battery energy storage system, which would be built at the site of an existing microgrid in western Egypt.

Independent power producers (IPP) Scatec and AMEA Power will build solar and storage projects totalling 1.1GWh of storage capacity for power purchase agreements (PPAs) in Egypt.

UAE-based renewable energy developer AMEA Power is set to build one of Africa''s largest solar PV projects in Egypt, with a generation capacity of 1GW, after signing several PPAs.

The solar PV project, situated in the Benban area, Aswan Governorate—a region already well known for its solar PV prowess via the 1.8GW Benban project—will be accompanied by a 600MWh battery energy storage system (BESS).

AMEA will also expand its500MW Abydos solar PV power plant, currently under construction, by adding a 300MWh utility-scale BESS. The developer will invest around US$800 million in the two new renewable energy projects in Egypt.

AMEA Power signed PPAs with the Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company for both projects, with these expected to create approximately 2,500 jobs during peak construction.

This is the second major announcement in the Egyptian solar PV and BESS market this week. PV Tech reported yesterday (12 September) that Norwegian renewable power developer Scatec had also signed a power purchase agreement (PPA) with the Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company for a 1GW solar-plus-storage project currently under development in the country.

The project will be co-located with a 100MW/200MWh BESS, and the Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company will acquire power from the upcoming Scatec project for 25 years. With both projects announced simultaneously, both AMEA Power and Scatec have made claims to developing the first utility-scale BESS project in the country.

The financing comes as KarmSolar launches a phase 2 expansion of the solar microgrid solution at a poultry farm facility in Giza operated by Cairo 3A. The expansion includes the addition of a battery energy storage system and an expansion of the solar plant’s capacity.

Sungrow is providing the battery storage unit, as previously reported by Energy-Storage.news. The energy storage system will comprise of a 2.576MWp PV inverter and 1MW/3.957MWh of storage.

KarmSolar has a PPA to supply electricity to the poultry farm using a microgrid combining solar PV, storage and diesel generators. The original on-site solar PV station covers 30% of Cairo 3A''s energy needs using renewable energy, reducing its reliance on diesel.

A project combining 30MW of solar PV with a 7.5MW battery storage system, also being supplied by Sungrow, will be commissioned during Q4 2022 according to the customer, goldmine operator Centamin in a news release from 13 October. The update from Centamin, which is listed on the London Stock Exchange, didn’t mention the energy storage component.
