SMEG is committed to supporting the Monegasque authorities in their endeavour to promote harmonious urban and economic development in the Principality respectful of the living environment, and is pursuing its policy of social commitment to the constant theme of sustainable development.

The company has only existed as such since 1976. Its origins can be traced back to SBM (Société des Bains de Mer) and the gambling concession in 1863. Public electricity has now existed in Monaco for more than a century, but if we look for the origin of SMEG, we will find it directly in the gambling activity. At the time, SBM''s concession contract included the construction of a gas plant.

The plant was smelly and produced large quantities of waste. But the network expanded and two gasometers were added in 1880.As for tar, tradition has it that Doctor Guglielminetti was the first to come up with the idea of spreading it on the roads, making Monaco the most modern city in the world by 1888.

The same year, the SBM brought electricity to the Casino and on 15 July 1890 the SME (Société Monégasque d''Electricité) was created by Sovereign Order, with a 50-year concession.

In 1898, the Société des Tramways equipped two lines with electricity. As needs grew, new factories sprang up, initially supply factories with increasing demands.

Competition appeared: EELM of Nice (Energie Electrique du Littoral Méditerranéen created in 1900), supplied Beausoleil and from there extended into Monaco. The SME had to buy its supplies from EELM.

Neither SME nor SMG suffered much from World War II. On 26 August 1944, the gasometers and pipes were seriously damaged, but they were repaired in less than one month. Electricity distribution was only rarely interrupted.

The French nationalisations of 1946 (creation of EDF and GDF) enabled the Principality to regain control of its energy: both EELM and CIG were thus able to integrate, first indirectly and then directly, Lyonnaise des Eaux, which was also out of the nationalisation scope.
