The Zina solar field, which is being developed by Amea Power, is being financed by the World Bank’s private sector arm and will be constructed in Mouhoun province.
The Zina project, in the village of that name in Mouhoun province, 185 kilometers from the capital Ouagadougou, is being financed by the International Finance Corporation private sector lender of the World Bank, in part with Canadian loans, plus the Emerging African Infrastructure Fund financed by the governments of the UK, the Netherlands, Switzerland and Sweden.
Amea said the project has secured a 25-year power purchase agreement from Burkinabe national utility Société Nationale d''électricité du Burkina Faso but did not reveal any further details of the project economics.
Hussain AlNowais, chairman of the developer, quoted in a press release it issued this week, said: “We support Burkina Faso''s drive to turn to solar as a vital measure to boost the energy supply and to reduce the country''s reliance on the importation of fossil fuels for power generation. The country is looking to add more than 500 MW of capacity by 2025, and Amea Power is pleased to be part of the country''s journey to provide clean, affordable and reliable energy to the people of Burkina Faso.”
The developer said it commissioned 50 MW solar plants in Togo and Jordan in 2021 and is awaiting financial close on a gigawatt of solar and wind capacity in Egypt which would double the scale of clean energy projects it has from late-stage development onwards.
The International Renewable Energy Agency has estimated Burkina Faso had 62 MW of grid connected solar capacity at the end of 2021, with that figure having been unchanged for three years.

The Promotion of Solar Solutions to Stimulate Green Employment in Burkina Faso (PROSSEV-BF) is a EUR 1.7 million initiative, financed by the Luxembourg Cooperation through LuxDev, which provides a combination of grants and technical assistance to private companies with the ambition to green their production facilities.
Implemented by the AECF, PROSSEV-BF supports private companies (SMEs) whose ambition is to promote solar installations and equipment for captive use within their activity; and which also demonstrate that the greening of their production units can lead to the creation of jobs for local populations.
This project is implemented mainly in 2 regions (Centre region and Hauts-Bassins region) and it is part of the support to the sustainable management of the resources program, financed by the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg and implemented by LuxDev, aimed at supporting private sector initiatives in the energy transition of key sectors of the national economy towards a greener and more inclusive economy.
The project is intended for private companies operating in the Centre region and the Haut-Bassins region of Burkina Faso. The capitals of these regions are Ouagadougou and Bobo-Dioulasso respectively. All companies active in urban and rural areas of these 2 regions are targeted.
The final beneficiaries of this financing are private companies (SMEs/SMIs) whose ambition is to promote and finance the installation of solar technological equipment for productive use in order to green and optimize their production systems. These companies must be able to demonstrate that the greening of their production units can lead to the creation of jobs in their value chains. Target companies must operate, but are not limited to, in one or more of the following agricultural and agribusiness sectors and value chains:
In a momentous ceremony, the Minister of State, Minister of Defense and Veterans, Brigadier General Kassoum COULIBALY, officially inaugurated the Zano photovoltaic solar power plant in the Boulgou province, Center-East region. Boasting a peak solar capacity of 24 Megawatts, this state-of-the-art facility is set to inject 38 GWh of clean electricity annually into the interconnected network of the Burkinabè National Electricity Company (SONABEL).
Spanning 54 hectares, the Zano photovoltaic solar power plant encompasses a field adorned with 43,960 monocrystalline panels, 1,570 strings, 88 inverters, 3 transformer stations, and 785 tracking system tables. With these components, the plant will contribute significantly to Burkina Faso’s goal of achieving 15% renewable energy in the national energy mix by 2025.
SONABEL’s Secretary General, Ouokana Ganou, highlighted the importance of Zano’s electricity output in advancing the nation towards its renewable energy targets. He commended the project’s success and the use of panels that track the sun’s movement for enhanced efficiency.
Representing the Prime Minister, Minister of State Kassoum COULIBALY emphasized Zano’s role in strengthening national production and increasing the share of solar energy in Burkina Faso’s energy mix. He expressed gratitude to the local communities for their contribution to the project and urged its continued consideration for their benefit.
