Burkina Faso, alandlocked country inWest Africa, faces significant challenges indeveloping areliable andaccessible electricity supply network. Thecountry has arapidly growing population andahigh demand for electricity tosupport economic development, social services andimprove thequality oflife for its citizens. However, Burkina Faso’s electricity infrastructure is still underdeveloped andstruggles tomeet theincreasing demand. Frequent power outages andvoltage fluctuations are common.

Thenational utility company, National Electricity Company ofBurkina Faso (SONABEL), is responsible for generating, transmitting, anddistributing electricity across thecountry. Despite its efforts, Burkina Faso continues toface several obstacles that hinder thedevelopment ofareliable electricity supply network.

One ofthe main challenges is thelimited access toelectricity. According tothe World Bank, in2021, only around 19% ofBurkina Faso’s population had access toelectricity, with rural areas being particularly underserved. This lack ofaccess impacts various sectors, including education, healthcare, andeconomic activities.

Theelectricity generation inBurkina Faso heavily relies on thermal power plants, which use fossil fuels such as diesel andheavy fuel oil. This dependence on imported fossil fuels exposes thecountry toprice volatility andsupply disruptions. It also contributes toenvironmental challenges andthe need for sustainable alternatives.

Burkina Faso has started investing inrenewable energy sources, particularly solar andwind power, toaddress these issues. Thecountry has abundant solar resources andhas implemented projects like the50MW Zagtouli Solar Power Station, which is one ofthe largest solar power plants inWest Africa. These initiatives aim todiversify theenergy mix, increase access toelectricity, andreduce dependence on fossil fuels.

Despite these efforts, thereliability ofthe electricity supply network remains asignificant challenge inBurkina Faso. Frequent power outages andload shedding are common, particularly during peak demand. Infrastructure limitations, insufficient transmission anddistribution networks, andageing equipment further contribute tothese reliability issues.

Burkina Faso’s electricity infrastructure is susceptible todisruptions caused byextreme weather events andsecurity challenges. These factors further impact thereliability andstability ofthe electricity supply network.

Burkina Faso is implementing various initiatives toimprove theelectricity supply network’s reliability. These include upgrading andexpanding thetransmission anddistribution infrastructure, investing innew power generation capacity, andstrengthening maintenance practices. Furthermore, regional cooperation andcross-border electricity trade are being explored toenhance energy security andstability.
