The Battery Research and Innovation Hub isa unique, world class, purpose-built, research and innovation centre for battery design and development, encompassing research, pilot-scale manufacturing and the commercialisation of energy storage technologies.

Specialising in advanced battery design, fabrication and testing, the facility includes a pilot production line to manufacture advanced batteries and battery components, complementing pouch cell prototyping, a cell and pack testing lab, and advanced cell diagnostics, materials characterisation and failure analysis. Research to advance existing technologies such as lithium-ion but also focus on sustainable alternatives such as sodium batteries.

The facility will also provide post-secondary education and training opportunities in battery production and process engineering and will be included in Deakin''s school and community outreach programs.

The facility will build Victoria''s role in the global supply chain for advanced batteries while meeting the bespoke battery needs of customers with demanding applications. Translating Australian IP into next-generation batteries, the hub will facilitate collaborative projects with our current partners and catalyse new partnerships within Victoria''s green economy.

Building on the success of BatTRI-Hub, which opened in 2016, our new specialised facility, was developed with $10.9 million in co-funding by the Victorian Government and Deakin and extends our research, manufacturing and testing capabilities.

The facility includes a dedicated research innovation laboratory for new battery design and development, prototyping and a cell and systems test facility for multiple battery types and sizes.

Based within the Institute for Frontier Materials, our expert interdisciplinary team of over 70 researchers specialise in battery design and development; testing and characterisation; pilot-scale battery manufacturing and, the commercialisation of battery storage technologies.

We welcome new partnerships by providing access to our facility and team, either through joint research projects or service agreements. We connect research to industry through:

We bring together 70 participants across 15 research projects and are the largest partnership of industry, government and researchers focused on battery industries in Australia.

Our aim is to capture the significant economic opportunities for Australia from the growing battery industry and address the challenges associated with the energy transition.
