The Government of Japan has agreed to provide project support of Japanese Yen 230 million (around Rs. 2.8 billion) through the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) for the provision of electricity facilities by establishing solar energy generation systems at Sri Jayawardenapura General Hospital, Kurunegala Teaching Hospital and Ratnapura Teaching Hospital.

The objectives of this project are to reduce the use of non-renewable energy in the health sector, to increase the overall efficiency of the health service sector and to promote sustainable development, the Cabinet Spokesman Minister Bandula Gunawardena said.

Accordingly, the Cabinet of Ministers has approved the proposal regarding the implementation of this project presented by President Ranil Wickremesinghe in his capacity as the Minister of Finance, Economic Stabilization and National Policies.

On February 14th, the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) signed a grant agreement with the Government of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka in Colombo to provide grant aid of up to 1,230 million yen for the Project for the Stabilization of Power Supply Using Renewable Energy at Hospitals.

22 August: Vertically-integrated solar firm and industrial goods company Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) has issued notices looking for partners to work on battery-based energy storage systems to be co-located with PV in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands

These projects, tendered by the utility NTPC, include a 17MW solar PV plant at Manglutan in South Andaman, Andaman and Nicobar Islands and an 8MW PV project at Chidiyatapu.

Sri Lanka’s hospitals power supply is to be stabilised using renewable energy with the Japanese government’s project grant assistance of Rs.2.8 billion, the Finance Ministry announced.

Under this project, rooftop photovoltaic solar power generation systems will be installed in three selected government hospitals: Sri Jayewardenepura General Hospital, Teaching Hospital Ratnapura, and Teaching Hospital Kurunegala.

In addition, photovoltaic modules and accessories, power conditioners and accessories, power cables and terminals, fire detectors, other related renovations and related services will be provided.
